In software testing companies, Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM) is prepared to showcase all the requirements defined for a system or software.

Requirements Traceability Matrix refers to a document that links the requirements throughout the validation process. The purpose of Requirements Traceability Matrix is to ensure that all the system requirements are tested in the test protocols.

RTM is started to be prepared with the initial set of requirements and its being updated within the updating requirements or newly designed specifications. Each phase of the testing protocol should be traced with the requirements specific to that phase.

RTM is a powerful planning tool and used in following cases:

  1. a) To determine how many tests are required
  2. b) Types of tests
  3. c) Test cases can be done manually or can be automated
  4. d) Whether existing test-cases be reused
  5. e) Estimation and analysis of QA result

It could also be used to determine the scope of regression test by considering connectivity between design, code and test-cases.
